We’re delighted that Photographic Artist Jeanette Lowe has had a photograph, taken as part of The National Neighbourhood : Around the Table project, selected for the prestigious Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) 187th Annual Exhibition.

The photograph “Stew House: Dublin 2017” is of the dining room at St. Joseph’s Penny Dinners in Dublin 1 and shows the dining room beautifully laid out as any restaurant might be, prior to the arrival of its guests.

St Joseph’s provides homeless people, and local people who cannot provide for themselves, with a hot meal each weekday. This is provided free of charge with a suggested contribution of €1. St. Joseph’s has been providing this service to the local community for over 100 years. It was one of the many Penny Dinners centres set up in the city to help the needy.

Around the Table was part of The National Neighbourhood and took place over five months in late 2016 / early 2017.  The project centred on Dublin’s North Inner-City and brought communities together with artists Jennie Moran, Donal Fallon and Jeanette Lowe, who worked in partnership with the National Library of Ireland and Dublin City Arts Office. Together they linked in with many community groups including ex-dockworkers, market traders and cafe owners and followed the journey of food, past and present, in Central Dublin until it arrives at the table.

The RHA 2017 Annual Exhibition opens on 23 May and runs until 12 August at the RHA Gallery Ely Place, Dublin 2. The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, print, photography, drawing and architectural models and it brings together works from RHA members, invited artists and artists selected from open submission.

Jeanette’s work was selected via Open Submission. Over 3,500 works were submitted by artists, with only 300 selected for inclusion. This is the fifth year that Jeanette has had work selected for the RHA Annual Exhibition.
